Many patients need new tissues or organs. However, transplanted donor tissues are rejected by the patient’s immune system. To counteract this, the patient needs immunosuppressants for the rest of their life.

This leads to significantly increased risk of infection and cancer, among other side effects. As a consequence, new tissues are only used as a last resort in life threatening conditions requiring heart, lung or kidney transplantation.
